Meet Desktop Ship: your desktop, reimagined as a transparent sci-fi cockpit. 🚀

For the last few weeks I’ve been building something I always wanted on my own machine. It’s a transparent overlay that turns your desktop into a spaceship cockpit, with floating “holo-widgets” that sit on top of everything. They’re click-through when you don’t need them, and always there when you do.

Built with Electron (transparent NSWindow, click-through, always-on-top, multi-monitor), it ships a whole catalog of draggable widgets:

🕐 Chrono · ▦ Systems monitor · ✷ Star map · ➤ Vessel · ✎ Ship log · ✓ Tasks · ⊡ Images · ⏵ Video (incl. YouTube + local files) · ⊞ Folder browser · ◍ Maps · ♫ Spotify · ⦿ Camera/webcam · ⊕ a full embedded web browser

The part I’m most excited about: Desktop Ship is controllable by AI via MCP (Model Context Protocol). 🤖

The future of the desktop isn’t more windows. It’s an ambient, AI-commandable HUD living on top of your work. 🛸
